So What are Black Friday and Cyber Monday Anyway?
Black Friday is the Friday following the American (USA not Canada) Thanksgiving holiday which is always on the third Thursday in November. The Friday is really a bridge holiday and in the US retail market marks the start of the Christmas shopping season. In order to incite people to start early, and therefore spend more, some of the grandest and most enticing deals can be found. It is officially the biggest shopping day of the year since 2005 (read Wikipedia article for official citations) and for much longer according to other sources. Some controversy surrounds Black Friday due to longer working hours for employees, overly crowded shops that impacting fire regulations, and inferior or bad quality products specifically manufactured to entice customers with low prices. Luckily this doesn’t concern any of the products here.
Cyber Monday is another, more recent, marketing term specifically concerning online shopping. It comes from a Shop.org/Bizrate Research 2005 eHoliday Mood Study saying that
77 percent of online retailers said that their sales increased substantially on the Monday after Thanksgiving, a trend that is driving serious online discounts and promotions on Cyber Monday this year (2005).
Hosting Companies never fail to miss a chance to have a sale and if you time it right you can get significant savings. For more specifics on which type of hosting might suit suit your needs please see a recent article I wrote on the subject.
WP Engine has deals based on the specific date you click so be sure to choose the right one:
For basic shared hosting SiteGround is my top recommendation and as luck would have it they are also having a huge sale at the moment of 70% off.
Another area where you find great deals is in e-learning. Treehouse which is a great favourite among web devs is offering 3 months off their Basic Annual Plan which could save you $75 USD (or so depending on your currency). If you are looking for a Pro Plan this is an excellent time to get one as it can save you about $147 USD. They also offer a Free Trial if you just want to see what they’re about.
WordPress Themes and Plugins
Soliloquy is the only slider plugin that I will recommend. And it turns out they are having a Black Friday Sale as well offering a 35% off discount from November 24th to December 1st, 2015. This discount is available for new customers as well as for renewals and upgrades.
I will update this article if I find any others or feel free to add others to the comments. I will include them provided that they follow the Affiliate Policy of this site, meaning that you take responsibility for your recommendations.
